*All of the pictured versions of these vehicles at least.

I’m not sure what to make of this. I mean, I know a ranger isn’t going to be all things that a real truck can be but at 110 inches x 58 and and 44 hp, 1500 lbs payload is pretty darn impressive. plus its got a full frame and 4 wheel drive.

Also, all 3 big players in the minivan market have 1500+ lbs payload...so there’s that.

Why is there a Beluga whale in this list of cars?

Interesting thing to think about.

Now this is not related at all, but out of the cars (trucks? SUVs?) you posted I would choose either the QX80 or the G550.

/sorry not sorry

The Ram’s payload is more than 1500 lbs though..?

Still impressive as hell though.

But also having the ability to drive on the road and tow more than 1500 lbs is nice.

The Ram Laramie 4x4 quad cab short bed 5.7 payload is 1375, oh and these can tow 2000 lbs and they can be made street legal (not highway legal) too.

cause they have terrible payload, way less than 1500 lbs of krill

I don’t dislike either enough to not love what they are underneath.

Well damn, my bad on both fronts.

That’s also shocking as hell on the Ram, even the Pentestar trucks were rated more than that.

I think its the air suspension, tuned for comfort or something. Pretty amazing though, right?

A non-exhaustive visual listing of tough vehicles* that can carry are manufacturer rated for use on public roads less cargo weight than one of these

I’d think you of all people would know the difference between rating standards.

But yes, as I’ve been saying for some time, side-by-sides are the small pickup trucks everybody says they want.

well yeah, its manufacture rated for the sxs but the manufacture also rates their own trucks too. Obviously there is a huge difference between 1500 lbs at 20 mph and at 80 but still. Interesting sidenote: All these vehicles picture have less payload than a sienna, odyssey or Grand caravan.

You are right about sxs being the small truck people want though. Too bad they will never be highway legal and all.

I still like Ram’s approach to trucks. Light duties have the best ride(plus mpg) and heavy duties can tow the most. We all know most people with half tons don’t tow a damn thing.

Yeah, the Laramie is more of an luxury SUV honestly.

But yeah, I had no clue they were so beefy.

So let’s look at this objectively:

Dodge Ram: Likely has the air suspension and 4WD. Air suspension and payload usually don’t get along very well. Consider that back in 2003, the Lincoln Navigator also had less than 1500lbs payload when ordered with 4WD. It was juuuuust over 1500lbs when the 4WD system was not installed on the Navigator

Chevy Colorado/Toyota Tacoma/Nissan Frontier: Suspension is likely more tuned for ride comfort than load carrying, because no new 1/2 ton or smaller is really designed to be a truck. They are almost universally cars with open air cargo bays. But that makes some sense, since most are used as cars.

Jeep Wrangler: I don’t think we need to hash this one, since Chrysler has barely rated it to carry itself around.

Mercedes G550/Nissan Patrol/Infiniti QX56/80/whatever it’s called today: The Nissan has a system that is similar in function to Toyota’s KDSS on the 200 Series Land Cruiser. The Merc doesn’t have that trick up it’s sleeve, but long travel suspension isn’t the greatest thing for payload numbers.

Comparing any of these to a Polaris Ranger is a bit apples to oranges, since no one buying a Polaris Ranger expects it to ride like a 200 Series Land Cruiser or Nissan Patrol etc.

But the minivans? The Chrysler vans are rated at 1400lbs payload. The Toyota and Honda can be had up to 1600lbs.

Well obviously its tongue in cheek, but last I checked you could get a grand Caravan with a very high payload.

Might be what was once the Grand Caravan C/V. The 1400lb number is for the Chrysler Town & Country (which doesn’t have a cargo version)

I found a curb of 4480 and a GVWR of 6050, for a total of 1570

The curb weight that I found of the T&C on Chrysler’s website is 4652lbs.

Dodge is reporting 4510lbs curb weight on the DGC.

the T&C may have additional features or heavier seats or something.

My point was that “can” and “what the manufacture decided was safe/ could do under set circumstances/ limit of the next weight class” are different things. Just like older trucks are rated to carry more, but that doesn’t mean they’re more capable. Mainly that off-highway and public road were different circumstances/standards. Also, I’m not sure about highway use, but UTVs are legal for regular road use depending on jurisdiction (possible modification required), so they’re still able to make the obligatory “run to the hardware/appliance store”.
